Venice Carnival Masks: the Bauta

Most used in XVIII century, for privacy

The Bauta was popular in Venice as anonymizer. It wasn’t used only during Carnival, but in normal life there were laws about mask usage. Anyway people from noble or rich families always used Bauta in parties or brothels to protect their families’ reputation.

The Bauta mask has such a fascinating history, I love it. A great masculine looking masquerade mask for men to wear.

The Bauta has to be combined with a tricorn and a black cloak, just like on the photo.
